Ancient Myth and the Ego
There is a trauma embedded in the human species as we know it today, that I believe we are on the cusp of overcoming- but first, we have to understand it. We have sought to resolve it in our mythology, our religion, cultures, and societies, in our art and literature.
The trauma I speak of is the essential character of the personified idea I call the Orphan Man. I am arguing that at the beginning of civilization, humans had evolved into a place where the ego took over. The Orphan Man is made an Orphan by his own egotistical tendency to disdain nature around him, and even the nature of his own animal self. He is an Orphan from the universe, wh

Aristotle- Eudaimonia and Energia- FlashSummary #1
Energia is a word coined by Aristotle based upon the Greek ‘ergon’, or work. Because the philosophy of Energia is discussed mostly in the excerpts on Physics and Metaphysics, this word can be made to be understood as, ‘thing-in-practice” or “thing-in-motion”.
The distinction I want to make here is that Aristotle’s Energeia should be understood as both ‘actuality’ or what Aristotle might also call ‘practicality’; or, to use a universally microcosmic version of that, ‘things in motion.’.
Aristotle applies the meani

What Anti-Transgender Hysteria Reveals About Gende
Recently several states have proposed so called "bathroom bills" following the passages of a bill in North Carolina that requires transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to the sex on their birth certificate. This would mean that transgender men (those whose birth certificate says female) , often indistinguishable outwardly from cisgender men (those whose birth certificate says male), would be forced to use women's restrooms and transgender women, often indistinguishable outwardly from cisgender women, would be forced to use men's restrooms.
Although this caused a lot of backlash, it also garnered support from many people, in

Zeno of Elea: His Worth in the Classroom
Many important philosophers and people are frequently spoken of in various textbooks that are used throughout the world. Regardless of how much some of these people have influenced history, many of them are not taught in the schools of the world. One of these unknown people was a philosopher, the best of the Eleatic school in ancient Greece, named Zeno. His life influenced thinkers after him that have affected how the human race views the world.
At the start of and before Zeno's life, Greece was in a time of war against the Persian armies. King Darius I, the ruler of Persia at the time, was wanting to punish the Greek city of Athens at the t

Dogmatic materialism
I was sifting through the phylosophy forum threads, and considering the ridiculous amount of religion based discussions, I often encountered atheists mocking, belittling and treating religion like some dogmatic superstition to be done away with.
Atheists in the forums here on dA continually use materialism, lack of evidence and falsifiability as arguments against 'ignorant' and 'dogmatic' beliefs.
It is my personal belief that at the core we all hold ridiculous, dogmatic beliefs that define the way we view reality, and that a little more tolerance is in order considering that we are all on equally arbitrary footing.

Equivalence a phantom concept?
Equality has become quite the prevalent word in our modern age. Some say that people should be treated equally, others that all people are born with equal rights. The symbol of the justice system is a blindfolded lady because all (presumably) stand equal before the law. Furthermore, we hear constantly of the financial inequality in our society; socialism and communism are based on the notion of repairing the inequality between social classes. But our inherent understandings of what 'equal' means starts long before the political discourse becomes part of our lives. We say that some sentences are equivalent like: "I owe you something." and "I d

Why Free Market Capitalism Fails
In this essay, I expose the flaws in the two mechanisms that are supposed to power the free market: Adam Smith's invisible hand and trickle down economics. The notion of the invisible hand holds that in a free marketplace, the buyer's self-interest will tend to drive the price down, while the seller's self-interest will tend to drive the price up, so that both parties' self-interest will naturally cause the price to settle on an amount that both find reasonable. Trickle-down economics maintains that the rich are the ones who start and expand businesses and hire employees, so the laws should favor them increasing their we

Property Dualism, Epiphenomenalism, Brain and Mind
“She does not understand, why? Is it the wine? No...what is it then? What is the reason? But soon it does not matter. Soon the why and the reason are gone, and all that matters is the feeling itself. And this is the nature of the universe; we struggle against it, we fight to deny it, but it is of course pretend, it is a lie. Beneath our poised appearance, the truth is we are completely out of control. Causality. There is no escaping it. We are forever slaves to it. Our only hope, our only peace is to understand it, to understand the why. Why, is what separates us from them, you from me. Why, is the only real source of power, without i
